Allen County boasts a wide variety of broadcast entertainment and broadcast and print journalism. Its news agencies win awards every year for their quality and in-depth reporting. A major news paper, three television companies and eleven radio stations provide news and entertainment around the clock.
The Lima News
Though Allen and surrounding counties abound with small local papers, The Lima News is the primary source of print-edition news for the region. The 35,000 daily circulation paper is owned by Freedom Communications Inc. in California. The Lima News is run by Publisher Stephen Johnson who’s been associated with major papers across the nation, including USA Today, The San Francisco Chronicle, and The Los Angeles Times.
The newsroom and sports department at The Lima News consistently earn numerous awards from the Associated Press. In 2005, the paper received 15 awards, including three First Place awards.
Your Hometown Lima Stations
In February 2009, Block Communications Inc., parent company of WLIO_TV purchased TV67 Inc, creating a unique situtation in the Lima television market; bringing all four major network affiliates under one ownership group. Since Februrary, all four networks have been converted to high definition along with increased signal strength. The coverage areas for the networks have increased 200-300%. Their commitment to news is econd to none as they telecast three and a half hours of live news programming daily across NBC and FOX. In addition they simulcast the 6pm news on ABC and the 11pm newscast on both ABC and CBS.
They are proud of their 56 years of broadcast excellence, started in 1953, with the NBC affiliate WLIO-TV. WLTW TV 44
WTLW is Allen County’s Christian television station. The station has won awards for its international documentaries and life-changing programs.
Its award-winning show 44 Magazine began airing in 1984 as Turning Point. A wide variety of guests have appeared on the show, including Charlton Heston and Richard Simmons. A special 1986 edition of Turning Point resulted in a spin-off show, Straight Talk from Teens. The one-hour live call-in show deals with teen issues and is syndicated to Christian stations in 30 major U.S. cities.
Clear Channel Radio
Clear Channel operates six radio stations in the Allen County area, with offices based in Lima. The flagship station WIMA FM was Lima’s first 24-hour radio station, getting its start in 1948. WIMA features news and talk radio. Clear Channel’s other stations, WIMT, WLWD, WZRX, WMLX, WBUK range in format from classic rock and pop music to country western. Clear Channel also operates the ABN Ohio agriculture network, which is syndicated to more than 65 affiliate stations.
Maverick Media Radio
Maverick Media operates four Lima radio stations: WLJM-AM, WFGF-FM, WUZZ-FM and WZOQ-FM, which range in format from ESPN sports to pop, rock and country western music.
